Moris Sabaner

Moris was born in 1964 in İstanbul. Through a long period, he has received painting classes from Bubi and Asaf Zeki Yüksel. The artist has been working at his studio in Asmalımescit for 10 years.

Moris Sabaner primarily works with acrylic and mixed media. He prefers to use every-day materials in his works, such as rope, paper and cloth.  In  his first solo exhibition titled Beyond the Doors, he worked primarily on canvas combined with materials such as door knobs, menorahs and wood extensions to give the illusion of life-size doors. Sabaner invites his audience to think about the lives beyond these doors.

Between 2011 and 2015 he has exhibited in various shows in Istanbul such as “Artists of the century group show”, “Tüyap Convention Center ARTIST group show”, “The Breath of Death group show” and “Beyond the Doors solo show”. The artist has participated in the exhibition “Artistes Sefardies” in Barcelona in 2014. In 2018, he participated in “1492: Göke” Exhibition organised by Yunus Emre Institute in London at La Galleria Pall Mall.

For the past two years Sabaner has been working on abstract paintings resembling walls. He is interested in walls’ dual purpose as a symbol of separation as well as unification. Although the cultural implications of walls resonate with borders and boundaries, Sabaner argues that walls may also imply cohabitation and neighbouring.

The artist experiments with different materials and uses a visual language of shape, form, colour and lines to create a composition. Moris is an outstanding artist and his artworks have followed a long period of maturation of intense thought based on his artistic life.
