Sara Aji

Born in 1957 in Adana, Sara graduated from Marmara Fine Arts Faculty with a Ceramics Degree.

Since 1982 she has been working on her ceramic art works, participating in many solo and group exhibitions and teaching ceramics at her own workshop in Istanbul. The artist has participated in various exhibitions between 1986 and 2000 in Istanbul and Ankara.

Also in 2000, she worked for Vitra Ceramics Workshop. She has also done ceramic workshops in several events such as “GESHER” – Balkans Gathering Event in Classis Hotel and “LIMMUD” – Intelligence Week in Ulus High School.

Sara’s solo exhibitions took place in AKBANK Gallery in 1999 and in Almelek Gallery in 2005. The artist participated in the exhibition “Artistas Sefardies” in Barcelona in 2014. In 2018 she was one of the artists who participated in “1492: Göke” Exhibition organised by Yunus Emre Institute in London.

Since 2000 she began to expose her ceramic works in prestigious festivals such as ODTÜ in Ankara. In 2007 she participated in an exhibition in the Military Museum which is one of the most important museums in Istanbul. In 2009 the artist exhibited her artworks in Işık University’s Art Gallery as well.

She is a member of TSD – Turkish Ceramics Association, GORSAV – Visual Arts Foundation and UPSD – International Plastic Arts Association. Sara is an outstanding ceramic artist, who produces with a diverse range of material. She is exceptionally attentive to the nuance of tone, colour and texture as well as shape and sculptural forms.

The artist’s contemporary ceramic work is born from a fascination of dramatic forms, movement and contrasts.

Sara Aji is one of the most well-known Sephardic ceramic artists in Istanbul.
